If your ute tray is a pile of tool bags, your van is full before the job starts, and you lose the first half hour of every day hunting for the right fitting, a tradesman trailer fixes that. Everything has a home, it locks up at night, and it brings its own power to site.
Here is what an 8x5 tradesman trailer does for a tradie, who it suits, and what to check before you buy one.
What a tradesman trailer actually is
A tradesman trailer is an enclosed, fitted-out trailer built to work as a mobile workshop. Instead of an open tray, you get lockable side doors, drawers and shelving inside, a rack on top for ladders and long material, and a power system that runs your tools without a generator.
You hitch it up in the morning, park it on site, open the doors, and your gear is laid out ready to go. At the end of the day you close it, lock it and tow it home, or leave it on site with the alarm set.
Who the 8x5 suits
The 8x5 earns its keep when you carry a lot of small parts and tools and need them organised, secure and powered. That usually means:
- Electricians, plumbers and gasfitters with hundreds of fittings and small parts to keep sorted
- Carpenters and builders who need power tools, a ladder rack and lockable storage on site
- Maintenance and handyman businesses running several small jobs a day
- Tradies working away from mains power, on new estates, rural blocks or remote jobs
If most of your loads are loose material like soil or rubbish, a tipper is the better fit. If you need even more storage and rack length, look at the bigger 10x5.
Storage that keeps the job organised
The 8x5 has six internal drawers and 11 compartments, so every tool and fitting gets a place, from small hand tools up to larger gear. Checker plate floors and guards stand up to boots and site wear.

On top, the tradesman rack is 2,400mm long and 1,400mm wide, and it extends to 3,620mm long by 1,000mm wide for ladders, pipe and long lengths of material. There is also a fridge slide with power access, so lunch and drinks stay cold on hot days.
Off-grid power for your tools
This is what turns the trailer into a workshop:
- 2 x 100W solar panels feeding a 20A solar controller
- 2 x 100AH batteries
- 2000W pure sine wave inverter running three 10A power points, with RCD protection
- Mains charging through a 15A inlet and a 30A smart charger, or charging from your vehicle through two 50A Anderson plugs
- 12V strip lighting inside, a Bluetooth headunit, and a 70L fresh water tank with a 12V pump
Solar keeps the batteries topping up through the day, so you can run chargers, lights and many power tools on site without a generator. Check your tools' wattage against the 2000W inverter rating before you rely on it for big loads.
Security
The 8x5 has an integrated alarm and central locking, so you lock every door at once and get an alarm if someone tries to get in. For tradies who leave gear on site overnight, that adds a real layer of protection for your tools.

What to check before you buy
- Your tow vehicle. With a 3,500kg ATM, your vehicle needs to be rated to tow at least 3,500kg with a 50mm tow ball. Check your owner's manual for the towing capacity and tow ball rating.
- A brake controller. The trailer has electric brakes on all four wheels, so your vehicle needs an electric brake controller fitted before you tow it.
- Your power needs. Add up what you run at once. The 2000W inverter suits chargers, lights and many power tools; very high-draw tools may still need site power.
- 8x5 or 10x5. If you carry long material every day or need more storage, compare it with the larger 10x5 tradesman trailer before you decide.
- Delivery. Inspect and collect from our yard at 11 Jade Dr, Molendinar, or we deliver Australia-wide. Delivery is quoted to your postcode.
